Etsy Listing Removed or Shop Suspended for “Not Handmade”? How to Appeal Under the Creativity Standards

Etsy's removal notices point to its Creativity Standards. The appeal that works proves which of Etsy's four categories your item actually belongs to — with evidence — and shows any AI or production-partner use was disclosed the way Etsy requires.

The short answer Etsy does not ban AI or outside production. Its Creativity Standards (last updated June 10, 2025) allow seller-prompted AI creations and production-partner items you designed — but both must be disclosed. Most "not handmade" removals come down to one of three things: the item doesn't fit any category, the AI use wasn't disclosed in the listing description, or the production partner wasn't disclosed.

Which category does your item belong to?

Your appeal should name the category your item fits and prove it. If it honestly doesn't fit any category, an appeal won't fix that — removing or reworking the listing will.

The two disclosure rules behind most removals

AI use

Etsy's standard is explicit: sellers must disclose within the listing description if an item is created with the use of AI. A design you prompted and refined is allowed; an undisclosed one is a violation. If you missed this, fix the description on every AI-assisted listing before you appeal, and say so in the appeal.

Production partners

Anything made by a printer, manufacturer or other partner must be disclosed: add the partner in your shop's production-partner settings (name or a descriptive title like "Apparel printer," location, and how you work with them) and give accurate ship-from information. Partners only apply to items you designed (or that the buyer personalized) — reselling a partner's ready-made catalogue isn't allowed.

The mistake most appeals make Writing "I made this myself" with no proof, or appealing before fixing the listings. Etsy's appeal form asks what you've done to fix the issue and how your practices will change — an appeal that shows the fixes already made is far stronger than a promise.

Evidence that actually helps

  1. Process proof — photos or short videos of you making the item or developing the design (sketches, layered design files, work in progress).
  2. Original files — source files and unedited originals of your product photos.
  3. Supply and partner records — invoices for materials, or your production-partner agreement and order history.
  4. AI records — if AI was used, which tool, what you prompted, what you changed afterward, and screenshots of the corrected listing descriptions.
  5. Screenshots of fixes — updated descriptions, the production-partner entry, removed listings.

Gather all of it before you submit. Send everything up front rather than offering to provide it later.
